The Freeport Chess Club meets every Thursday evening at the Freeport Memorial Library from 6:30 to 9:00 PM (rounds start at 6:50), except those evenings on which the library is closed. The library is located at 144 W.Merrick Rd. in Freeport, New York, across the street from McDonald's. For cancellations due to bad weather, call the library at (516) 379-3274. The Freeport Chess Club is an affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and runs USCF-rated tournaments. To play in our tournaments, you MUST be a member of the USCF. To join the USCF or renew an existing membership, go to the USCF website at www.uschess.org or call the USCF at 1-800-903-8723. Club membership is $40 per year. Club members receive a $10 discount on entry fees for all club tournaments. Non-members can play in all tournaments except the Club Championship by paying an extra $10.

The club does NOT use Rule 14H (insufficient losing chances), nor does it permit the use of time delay. Please bring your own chess equipment (pieces, board, clock). Effective March 5, 2009, all requests for half-point byes are irrevocable and all withdrawals from tournaments are final.

The club is run by USCF Local Tournament Director and Candidate Master Michael Pappaceno. Jack Edelson is the assistant director and the club's webmaster. Besides being rated an expert by the USCF and being a certified tournament director, Mr. Pappaceno is a professional educator who holds a New York State high school teacher's license and teaches both high school English and chess. Mr. Pappaceno's Master's thesis, accepted by Dowling College in 1992, involved the relationship between chess and mathematics. Mr. Pappaceno's chess teaching rates are $30 per hour for private lessons and $40 per hour for group lessons. To arrange either private or group lessons, see his contact info below.

November 12 - December 10, 2009

4SS - G/60 ($$220.00 based on 15 entries) Entry fee: Club members $26 in advance, $31 on site. Non-members pay $10 more. To qualify for the advance entry fee, you must pay in advance OR notify Mike Pappaceno by phone or email (contact info above) of your intention to play no later than Wednesday, November 11. Prizes: 1st place - $90, 2nd place - $65, top score under 1800 - $65. Registration will be from 6:30 to 6:45 on November 12. Any player who enters after 6:45 PM on November 12 will have to take a half point bye for round 1. Rounds will start at 6:50 PM each Thursday, except on November 26. The club will be closed for Thanksgiving on November 26.

Two half-point byes permitted. Requests for half-point byes for round 4 on December 10 MUST be made before the start of round 2 on November 19. All requests for half-point byes are irrevocable. As in all Freeport Chess Club tournaments, Rule 14H (insufficient losing chances) and time delay will NOT be used.
